My first fire in Arizona, we spent three days in an area with hardly any fuel, with a mob of people that in my prior experience in the Sierra, we’d have only had four people on for a day. In most of the country along the border, not much fuel.
Now around Mt Lemon, or up around and above the Mogollon, different story. Along the Colorado and in drainages, there is also on occasion some “exciting” fuel loads!
Our fire crews also used to include a LOT of “immigrant” workers, and they had to have bilingual crew bosses. The worst problem was they were terrible at taking proper care of their feet. They saved (made) contractors a lot of profit by working cheaper…
