Just illustrates that all intelligent, thinking creatures (including cartoon goldfish who build pulpits, church organs and pews) are scared to death (no pun intended) of dying, and they make up stories to explain it and calm their fears, Rational atheist goldfish know perfectly well that when you die you float up to the top of the bowl and then get flushed down the toilet.
In “The Phantom Tollbooth,” Alec Bings talks about various ways to look at a bucket of water. He says, “To a fish, of course, it’s home.” I consider that a failure on Norton Juster’s part. A bucket is home to a fish like a dungeon cell is home to a human.

As the head fish thinks about it, the sermon will change and the fish in the bowl will swim free in an endless lake with all the other fish.
