I forget who said “A good novel tells us the truth about its here. A bad novel tells us the truth about its author.”

99.9% of the time this is true. I have, however, read a book that was so bad that, rather than donate it, I threw it away so it wouldn’t ruin someone else’s day.

There was a time when badly written, poorly conceived, and generally worthless books were not published. This is no longer true. Well conceived, well executed, and well written books still don’t always get published, as has been the case for most of modern history. Is this progress?
