My courageous but very old and ailing cat is going to the vet’s office today. Unfortunately, it’s the kind of trip he won’t come home from. Seventeen years of companionship is a good run, though.
I’m back from the vet, minus one cat. He died peacefully in my arms. I arranged to have him cremated, and when the remains are returned, he will be placed in the urn along with the ashes of my late wife. He was really her cat, and they will be together again, and eventually I will join them.
I did not return to an empty house. There is still a live cat here, so I have that much continuity in my life. In a couple of months, I shall probably adopt a second cat – they’re better in pairs, and when you lose one, you still have a companion who is part of the household and not a replacement.

runar, my condolences. No matter the length of time, it is always hard to lose a good companion.

Two years next month my old Hyena Tom’s gone. He’s pushing up daises out in the pasture. Condolences.
