Sure it is. It doesn’t happen very often, but I’ve seen it done to avoid a tag when the throw to first is off the mark.

well, yes, to be sure, but in the 100 meter dash you don’t have to stop at the finish line like you have to stop at the base without going past it.

1st and Home you don’t have to stop on the base.

You ARE allowed to slide into first; it’s just not done because it’s faster to just run over and past it. Only for a bad throw might you do it to avoid a tag. And you do NOT have to stop on first. And please, it’s foul line, not fowl like. There are no chickens in baseball.

sorry, I just assumed the guy was sliding head first into second or third.anyway, we now know that not only is there no crying in baseball, there are no chickens in baseball…..with the possible exception of the San Diego Chicken

Unless they outlawed it since the 60’s it is. Ron Hunt, hustling second baseman for the hapless Mets, slid into first on at least one occasion.

No rule prevents sliding into first, other than the rule of reason. If you must slide head first, carry a glove in each hand – the fists help prevent injury.

If the coach hollers “DUCK!” can you go over the fowl line?
