Heard it said: Soccer is a gentlemen’s game played by hooligans. Rugby is a hooligans game played by gentlemen.

Define what a sport is. To me, any activity YOU participate in that requires physical activity that you compete against other people or things.

This discussion about soccer would be a great time to see Jack and Abby in a little cameo.

My dad hated golf, called it, “goof.” I like golf for the skill and precision required to strike a small ball accurately with a small club face. I prefer soccer over all other ball sports for the action, passing skills. and ball control, also the lack of extra equipment, just athlete, ball, field, and goal.

George Carlin defined a sport vs activity as the possibility of injury. Ergo, golf like curling is not a sport. Soccer blurs the line with real faked injuries.

The idiotic lady hears NASCARS and doesn’t question that as a sport, but does questions soccer (Football to the rest of the World) as a sport? That is a bit stupid. Low scoring baseball is ok, but low scoring football isn’t? I know NASCAR advocates says it takes a lot of stamina to race cars and they have a point. Football takes a lot of stamina, too, especially since they don’t allow substitution after every football (American) play.

If it has a defined goal that can be measured on a pass/fail – put a ball or puck in the net, move the ball past your opponent than it is a sport. if the goal is subjective than it is a competition ie gymnastics or figure skating

Not to worry: In the US, at least, where baseball is turning into home run derby, soccer will turn into penalty-shot-derby.

Isn’t there more time spent rolling around on the ground like you were hurt by the guy 5’ away from you as there is scoring?

They are on the pitch for 90 minutes. Almost all the time at least half are either walking or standing.
