Didn’t Yao Ming come into the league AFTER Barkley retired? The deal with China might have been in the works at the time but he hardly played “leashed” by China. As I recall, former commissioner Stern wanted to expand the number of teams, but absolutely did not want to go beyond Europe, and even then only for the best of the best Euroleague stars (if they could make an NBA team).
