Sad, but true. However, the founding owner of the Miami Dolphins Joe Robbie put up almost every asset, in addition, to promise that all skybox revenue would go to paying off the stadium’s debt to finance the building of what is now known as Hard Rock stadium. I believe Stan Chronkey of the Los Angeles Rams did the same thing as well though Robbe had nowhere near the assets that Chronkey has.
Read what Bud Adams did to Houston by taking the Oilers to Tennessee Titans AFTER getting us to invest in 1987 to renovate the stadium so he wouldn’t move to Jacksonville, and BECAUSE we wouldn’t build him a NEW stadium in 1994.
During the late 1940s and early 1950s the Brooklyn Dodgers bought up land around Ebbets Field and put together a building fund to build a new stadium, all privately funded. Robert Moses, the Dictator of New York, told the Dodgers that they could only build at a site in Queens called Flushing Meadows. The Dodgers left and took the Giants with them. the stadium did get built in Flushing, they called it Shea. An uncle whose father was from Brooklyn told me an old joke. That if he was in a room with Hitler, Stalin and Robert Moses and a gun with just two bullets he would shoot Moses. Twice.

That is one foolish tradition. It NEVER pays in tax revenue what it cost to build it.

And “the public” very seldom has a chance to opt out.

Sports have become so commercialized that we have lost sight of what matters: The spirit of the game.

Although that is starting to finally fade. Even the best scams have their limits.

True capitalism, forcing others to pay your expenses.

I wonder if the Romans did the same thing when they built their coliseums and circuses throughout the Empire?

PS…whoever edits the wiki page for Tank McNamara should build a grid of Sports Jerk of the Year (year – jerk – maybe notes on WHY).

Freezing to death on opening day is a Chicago tradition.
Went to an opening day at Wrigley once(Sosa era)>I swear it was 15 degrees colder inside the ballpark than it was out on the street
