To prevent cats (or some dogs…) from retrieving trashed items, seal them in a closed bag and garbage can outside, and make sure the can lid is secure. One of my past cats went nuts trying to get a ruined catnip mouse out of the garbage – I swear she was mourning her lost toy! (Never mind that she had a basket full of other toys and catnip mice…)
