Bluebell is lookin’ a little elderly around the edges.

Speaking of elderly… they are letting folks 60 and older shop at our local Smiths (Kroger’s) on Mon. We’d. & Fri from 7 to 8 AM. Now that would be nice if I could ever wake up that early!

We were able to get Gluten Free spaghetti and a bag of rice on Amazon today. Also some weird kind of commercial paper towels. Yay!

Also they closed all the off-the-strip casinos today. And all slot machines in the grocery stores. Yes we have them there!

    Today is:

    National Awkward Moments Day

National Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) Day

National Supreme Sacrifice Day. This is fitting as so many places are making an extreme sacrifice, closing their businesses because of this stupid virus everyone is talking about.

National Sloppy Joe Day (good luck finding ingredients for that in the store these days as stores are selling out of everything)

National Lacy Oatmeal Cookie Day. With so many people staying home from work & school, it’s a good chance to bake, if the store has and flour or sugar still in stock.

National Kick Butts Day. A lot of us would like to kick a lot of butts with all those people hoarding toilet paper, cleaning supplies and everything else.

    National Biodiesel Day

Te banks closed their lobbies – you can only do drive-up banking. And the malls have now closed, putting lots of people out of work for a while. A few friends and I get together at the food court in the mall once a month and we take turns bringing dessert. It was my turn to bring dessert this month, but we canceled the lunch because one of our party got sick with pneumonia. So we rescheduled for April 14 – still my turn to bring dessert. Being just 2 days after Easter, I was planning on baking an Easter Bunny cake, using a special cake pan. But I’m not sure if the mall will re-open by then. What are they going to close next?

Today I made corned beef and cabbage and Irish soda bread, with some Harp lager. Yum! My daughter did not join us because she only recently began to self quarantine and she did not want to make us sick. So I will bring her a care package tomorrow with the goods and a few other things. She and her millenial friends are going nuts in their tiny apartments. But they are scheduling video-conference calls to get together on line. Unfortunately those video margaritas are not very satisfying.

I just bought a can of Sloppy Joe sauce today! I went to Costco and they were only letting 30 carts in at a time. I didn’t get a cart, I only had to wait about 5 minutes. I went to my Safeway and they had pretty much everything. It wasn’t very crowded. (I’m not saying where) The paper products aisle was pretty bare and they didn’t have any 6packs of 20oz Diet Pepsi. I managed to spend $160.

The meme I wanted to find showed a young man stretched out in front of a TV. Caption read: “Your grandparents were called to war………You’re being asked to sit on the couch. You can do this!”

    However on a related topic:

Trust the cat to want another long nap as soon as it wakes up.

Some of our stores here are instituting special hours for anyone 65+ to do their groceries in relative peace and quiet.

Not a very comfortable spot for a nap. Heading 40 miles north (closest market!) early this morning to do about 10 days worth of shopping. With the ski resorts closed I am expecting fewer crowds and fuller shelves, although the only things missing last Friday afternoon were the sanitizer/paper things. Plenty of open space to walk the dogs while I wait for our little health food store to open later in the morning – a local woman makes a wonderful all nut and seed bread available on Wednesdays only. We were in the 20s overnight, not good for our blooming fruit trees.

This panic surging worldwide strikes me as embarrassing. We Americans in particular are not the hardy people that sacrificed and went to war in 1941. We have become soft and easily panicked. Consider these statistics:

The 1918 flu outbreak. It is estimated that about 500 million people or one-third of the world’s population became infected with this virus. The number of deaths was estimated to be at least 50 million worldwide with about 675,000 occurring in the United States. (cdc.gov)

And then there’s Polio which killed or paralyzed untold thousands before a vaccine was developed in the 1950’s.

Worldwide more than 140,000 people died from measles in 2018, according to new estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United States Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC). These deaths occurred as measles cases surged globally, amidst devastating outbreaks in all regions. (who.int)

Flu Kills 646,000 People Worldwide Each Year (MedicineNet.com)

Now look at Coronavirus Cases: 206,942, Deaths: 8,272 worldwide, and Recovered: 82,889 (worldometer.info)

You’ve got to hand it to Rip and his furry Friend. That was no mere cat nap! On another note, saw some robins, a wren, a junco, and a squirrel while out walking today. I also saw a Stellar’s jay outside and I heard a red tailed hawk.
