The book you provide a link to explains that Abel Grimmer (and his father Jacob, as well) uses winter in a “figurative” sense, representing the isolation and exile of the Holy Family in the Flight into Egypt. It explains that soldiers were left unpaid during winter, and preyed upon citizens, and this is some of what is depicted in this and related paintings. All very interesting! (see pages 178 into 179).Thank you for the links! You do a great deal of research for your postings, and I appreciate the education it provides for us all!

That bridge I have seen live just outside Schnecksville, Penna. It crosses, amazingly, the Jordan River. Go Google it.
