    They figured they’d lose Herod’s soldiers that way.

    Modestly enlarged image can be found here, or at the only work, by this artist, so far, to appear in Mr. Melcher’s blog.Winter Landscape With Flight Into Egypt (link shows Wikipedia page) is probably privately owned.The artist apparently had no concept of where Egypt is, and also painted this click-to-enlarge image, shown here and discussed on pages 178-179 of an online book, this (click spyglass in image to enlarge), very similar to this image, shown here, all with a similar title.His Wikipedia page (Google translated French Wikipedia page has more) and collection.

    @mabrndt:

    The book you provide a link to explains that Abel Grimmer (and his father Jacob, as well) uses winter in a “figurative” sense, representing the isolation and exile of the Holy Family in the Flight into Egypt. It explains that soldiers were left unpaid during winter, and preyed upon citizens, and this is some of what is depicted in this and related paintings. All very interesting! (see pages 178 into 179).Thank you for the links! You do a great deal of research for your postings, and I appreciate the education it provides for us all!

    That bridge I have seen live just outside Schnecksville, Penna. It crosses, amazingly, the Jordan River. Go Google it.
