Ramona: Your husband is acting weird.
Gladys: He tends to get carried away on holidays. What did he do?
Ramona: He stuck a feather in his cap and called it Macaroni!
That’s oddly appropriate for a Born Loser. When the song was written, a “macaroni” was a young Brit fop who had done the European tour and acquired a taste for pasta and who now aped continental fashion and was much derided for it. The Americans were, then, according to the British army song, bumpkin enough to believe wearing a feather made you an acceptable “macaroni.”
