Classic diphthongs. Couch. Bait. Coin. Dean.
The “ow” sound in “couch”, or “cow” is actually two vowel sounds… short “o” like in “hot”, and then “ooh”, said in very quick succession. Cah-ooch.
That’s what a dipthong is.
“Coin” said slowly enough to hear the dipthong would be “Co-een..”
If it were NOT a dipthong, that is, if we couldn;t hear the second vowel, “i”, it would sound like “cone” or “con.”
I don’t really hear a dipthong in “bait” … no, I do….it’s “bay-eet”.
We run them together so quickly we think it’s one sound… but it isn’t.
Seeing a dip like Dean in a thong makes us run quickly, too.
