I was on a date with the woman that would become my wife, and the menu offered a 300 year old brandy. I started laughing when I saw it and my wife gave me a quizzical look (that I’ve received many times over our 25 yr marriage). I said, can you imagine that some farmer made this back in the 1700’s. He put it on a shelf and eventually gave it to his son or daughter who put it on a shelf. Who gave it to his/her child or maybe sold it, but again, it was put on a shelf. This happened for 4-5 (or 6 or 7) generations and now it’s being sold in a random restaurant in Framingham, MA.
It amazed me that so many generations of people could have simply ignored this bottle of brandy taking up space on a shelf some place. How many bottles were with it? I have difficulty imagining making a product today that’s intended to be sold in 300 years. How do you make money doing that?
