You lose the upper frequencies first. The consonants are higher pitched than the vowels, so you hear someone talking but don’t quite get what they’re saying and it’s because pieces of the words are missing. Good hearing aids are programmed to target the frequencies exactly according to what you need. The earlier in the process you get them, the easier and faster it is to train the brain to be able to pick out sounds from a noisy environment better. Got my first pair of hearing aids at 27 after a reaction to a med. Good luck!

I test hearing and fit hearing aids for a living. I get that “joke” several times a week. I also get the folks who seriously can’t hear me.

The same could be said about hunting without hearing protection.
