Hiding under the desk wasn’t for protection (though it might offer some from broken glass from the windows), it was for demonstrating that Something Was Being Done so children wouldn’t panic. sergioandrade’s rosary was probably almost as effective.
We did this when I was in first grade. Only we didn’t go “under the desk”. We all went out into the hallway and sat against a wall, putting our heads down between our legs. This was 1963. After Kennedy was assassinated, we never did this again. I did not understand why we were doing this (it was called a “Civil Defense Drill”), but took it in stride just the same way as having a Fire Drill. I’m really glad, in hindsight, that I did NOT understand the magnitude of what we were doing.

October, 1962, Cuban Missel Crisis, I was in 3rd Grade, Nuns made go into the hallway and stand there and made us pray a rosary.
