    The saying came about in times of starvation. Horses allowed humans to travel further and faster. To be so hungry you would eat one meant food was so scarce you have to eat what you have…..your transportation.

    During WWII, we did eat horse because that is all that was available to us. My mother then had nightmares about horses. The rest of us were fine with it.

    Reminds me of a lot of kid things — not being tall enough to see the top of some furniture, not understanding words that my older brother and mother bandied about. “Doubt” was one that really irked me as a kid; it was one I couldn’t figure out from the context. And then, there was the day I got a radio with a GOOD speaker and learned what all the words to the Top 40 songs of my teen years really were. And then computers came along, then cell phones….life has been an unending learning experience. sigh. I ’m ready for the pause button….
