One of the “Boys” in Cannery Row was the busboy for a bar. He’d empty unfinished drinks into a bottle behind the bar and share it around with his buddies after work.
Also reminded of the two years my church had the contract to clean the Cheyenne Frontier Days stands the morning after night shows. I soon settled into my job being emptying unfinished drinks into a bucket, then dumping it down a drain. Many only drank $2.50 worth of their $5 beers and lemonades. It was later I realized that what I was doing was making shandy. Thought of posting a couple ads in the program: “MOMMY, WHAT ARE THOSE CANS MARKED ‘TRASH’ FOR?” “I PAID FIVE BUCKS FOR THIS BEER! OF COURSE I’M NOT GOING TO FINISH IT!”
