Moths’ navigation systems are based on a strong light at night being far enough away (like the moon) that if they keep it on their left or right side, either one, it will stay on that same side as they fly along. When they come upon a light that is quite close, and they keep it on the left or right side, their course will not be a straight line, but an ever tightening arc. Call it a death spiral, if you will. They’ve had to contend with fires for a very long time, but with outside electric lights only a very short period of years.
