When I was active in search and rescue with the CAP I would carry dog treats in the top pocket of my flight suit and some extras in the survival vest and pack that were part of my gear. I first heard the idea in a basic survival class (probably four decades ago now) and it sounded like a damn good tactic and, besides, if I got really hungry I could eat the damn things myself 8^)
