The only proper response to the Breastfeeding Police is is an incredulous look for a few seconds, followed by, “Huh? YOU eat in public, don’t you?!”

I think I’ve figured out why movie violence is okay and movie sexuality is not. Basically, movie-style violence is extremely unlikely to become part of an ordinary person’s life. Sex, on the other hand, is LIKELY to become part of an ordinary person’s life. To the extent kids emulate action heroes, it is with pretend weapans and violence – but if they emulate TV/Movie sexuality, they do it with real nudity and sex.

As for today’s strip, it’s rather different from Tintin. Tintin (almost) never kills anyone, and if he does, it’s by accident. His style is much more fists-o’-fury. Of course, the point of the strip is well-taken. As always.

I saw part of her exposed cartoon breast. I shall forever be scarred and my attitude toward evil women permanently twisted.

Actually, breast-feeding is certainly sexual. The question is whether it’s erotic. Apparently many people think it is; people who breast-feed often report erotic sensations, and on a more abstract level there is a large genre of pornography related to breast-feeding and lactation. One is usually discouraged from saying much about it, however, because there remain fairly strong taboos about eroticism: we permit it to be noticed or sought only in certain fairly restricted contexts.
I don’t know if I agree that serious violence is unavailable to the average person, although direct participation may be. Observe the behavior of the American government, which kills hundreds if not thousands of people every year as a routine matter; this behavior is widely supported politically, that is, people are willing to take responsibility for it. And, of course, our arts are soaked with vicarious violence, which the present strip derides.

I think my favorite story about breast feeding in public was when my kids were young. Stores and malls had just started putting in family bathrooms and women’s lounges. The lounges were located in the same area as the rest rooms, but were not in them and were designed to give the maximum comfort to women breast feeding and to keep them away from the stalls. I had taken my children to the family rest room-a boy and a girl. While I was waiting for them, a woman came in with her baby and proceeded to breast feed. Fine, no problem, but personally I wouldn’t have chosen the family rest room to do it. When my daughter came out of her stall (she was about 4), the woman was clearly not happy. But she was VERY upset when my son (about 7) came out of the other stall. She didn’t say anything, just glared daggers at him and me, but if she had I would have asked her if she thought that this bathroom was the ladies’ lounge

What do you think God had in mind for human babies to eat? The kids that are breastfed are in better health both physicaly and emotionally.
