did you know? this week -- new york city "the big apple"! "the city that never sleeps"! "gotham"! "the center of the universe"! "the only place that matters"! "better than where you're from, which sucks"! whatever nickname you prefer to call it by, the city of new york is the world's largest exporter of fun facts about tiself! fuggedaboudit! if one ignores certain facts and figures, new york is the biggest city in the world! the island of manhattan is not real! it is the elaborate imaginary construction of famed comedian-turned-filmmaker woody allen! bellevue is an entire psychiatric hospital for new yorkers driven insane by the existence of bagel bites, an affront to both of nyc's sacred totemic foods, pizza and bagels! new york's storied "korean delis" neither serve korean food, not are they delicatessens! good luck deli they are the holy roman empire! new yorkers will not see movies! the internship! instead, they hire gay people to write songs about them and perform them live in theaters on broadway street! some of our less fabulous, more ethnic celebrities live in new york! new york city is so great, there is a song, a city in england, and even a whole u.s. state named after it! the city is divided into two zones, or "boroughs": chinatown, for chinese people, and regulartown, for regular people. nyc's eccentric mayer is currently in prison after a cell-phone video revealed him drinking an extra-large soda!

i always wondered that about new york city. show me it’s borders. it seems to me those boroughs are a crock. maybe we should count the suburbs here as part of the metropolitan population, like new york does. then chicago can be the largest city in the world, along with being the greatest.

I’d like to see NYC become its own separate entity, parted from the rest of the state.

I flew in right after 9/11/01 and it was the only time I felt any kinship to the people who live there. What a hole.

I have a love/hate relationship with NYC, born out of living there off and on as a young man. New York is a young person’s city. The energy and vibrancy are wasted on us oldsters. The dynamic is a brash, get-out-of-my-way-I’m-goin’-places attitude that you either embrace or run away from.Still, I will take New York over any other city in the U.S. !

Fun Fact: People who hate New York City and would never dream of visiting, let alone living there, are under no obligation to do so! Likewise, people who would never dream of living anywhere else may stay!
Of course, the same holds true of Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Manhattan Kansas, and Oblivion Ohio. Is this a great country, or what?
I’ve only been to NYC once, many years ago (I was 11), and have never really had cause to go back. I wouldn’t mind, I think, but the city’s just too damn big for me to want to live there.

It has always seemed to me that both San Franciscans and New Yorkers are equally parochial and self-centered regarding “their city”, and neither has any real justification for feeling that way.Yes, I know I’m generalizing – what the heck, this is GoComics.

Who says Manhattan isn’t real? My favorite Korean deli is right there in Woody’s left nostril.

This Torontonian got a good laugh for the obvious reason. I’d say soda would be a better thing to be using, but given Ford’s girth….

There are now TWO songs about New York City, since Jay Z was kind enough to pen “Empire State Of Mind.” This makes New York City even greater, if that’s possible!

I understand NYC is rated #1 for Neck Craning. On account of those tall buildings. And Batman flying around—you have to crane your neck to see him. And Spiderman. And Superman. And Tom the Dancing Bug.

The Rob Ford shoutout in the last frame is hilarious.

There was a time, of course, when Manhattan really WAS the center of the world, before telecommunications. When anything important needed to happen and everybody involved needed to be in the same place, New York City was where they’d meet; and for convenience’s sake, most of them were already there. Business, entertainment, finance, publishing… Your “home office” might be in Chicago or Cedar Rapids or London or Buenos Aires, but the New York office was where the deals were made.
“If you are a young person with talent and ambition, you must go to New York City.If you have ambition but no talent, go to Los Angeles. If you have talent but no ambition, go to San Francisco.”
(That’s in quotes because it’s not mine, but I can’t remember where I got it from.)
