L.P. Hartley wrote a great short horror story called ‘W.S.’ about an author who ‘comes to grips’ with one of his early characters. It’s not about William Shakespeare.
That’s interesting, it may describe many of the authors I’ve read. You put all of the characters together and you have the author. Separate the characters out and you see the authors inner conflicts played out as inter-personal drama or even grand battles.
When I started writing my fantasy story as a teenager, I definitely had a character in mind as “me.” But with time (and writing info like this), I realized different characters have different elements of me. One has my logic, but also a hearty dose of my impulsive side, lol
