That particular misunderstanding is just so typical - yet pretty funny.
Reminds me of 39 years ago when I attended the first day of my first big-lecture college course, and when they handed me an 8” stack of printouts at the door, I asked if I was supposed to pass them out or what. (It was my supplemental reading in addition to the list of books to purchase for the course.)
Besides that, all I remember about the course is that the lecturer’s favorite phrase was the extra throw-away comment, “as it were.” I never did figure out what if anything that meant.
