This is so true for Europe. A friend of ours took his GPS from NA and loaded a free APP for Europe. It had a “goat path” function and he left it on, he said it was like one of those crazy car chase movies, through tunnels and one-way one car roads. After a couple of days he realized what the problem was.

When I bought my GPS, I set it to take me home by putting my address into it. It tried to take me everywhere but where I live. When I ignored it and turned up the road to my home, it told me to drive right past my street even though the street was clearly marked on the GPS map. Out of curiosity, I decided to follow its directions to see where it would take me. I ended up on some old farm dirt road before the GPS gave up trying to find my address. I had to sit in my driveway and tell the GPS “this is home” to get it to direct me home correctly.
My wife got me a TomTom for my birthday a few years ago. Other than the annoying “After 400 yards, keep left” when I’m driving down a freeway, it’s often been pretty handy. Especially when driving in the Motorists’ Maze known as Portland, Oregon (where some visitors have been trying to find their destination since last July).
I primarily use my Garmin to check time/distance and other route data, as well as double checking my speedometer. Although it has quite trying to take me down a non-existent logging road when I take my favorite shortcut.
At least it didn’t do one thing my old Magellan GPS did – “where possible make a legal U turn”. It did that to me 3 consecutive times in Branson MO a couple years ago and put me RIGHT BACK where I started. Needless to say I now own a Garmin; so far it hasn’t had me making U-Turns.
