Night-Gaunt49, you’ve never fallen in. That said, I prefer to stick to the seat than fall in… and that’s bad enough.
As for seat up and seat down, we have separate bathrooms. It cures which way the seat should be left (if I use his I put it back up, if he uses mine he puts it down) and we cured the TP direction war (he is an under and I am an over) and better yet. He cleans his. Improved his aimity a LOT.
The problem with the consideration argument is that it assumes the man has to be considerate of the woman, but the woman does not have to be considerate of the man. That’s no valid argument at all. Each person is responsible for their own bathroom needs and clean-up (in case of spillage). However, a valid argument for closing the lid (and not just the seat) is that germs from the flush fly up into the surrounding air when the lid is open.
Seat should be down. When I was 8 1/2 months preggo, I got up during the night and suffice it to say that I was trapped and very very angry as he leaned against the door frame and laughed…..
It’s very simple: It’s a crime for the man to forget to put the seat down because the woman might forget to put the seat down. Understand that logic and you will have taken a big step in understanding women!
If you need the seat up, put it up! If you need to sit, put it down! Falling in or having to clean up “spillage” a few times should be sufficient to train even the most dense and recalcitrant individuals!
I found out, a few years ago, with a rather graphic example, just how much particulate matter is ejected when one flushes the toilet (seriously, google it. youll find quite a few people willing to show it). since then, it’s no debate. Lid down, outright. Ended any and all seat arguments in my house.
Another reason for closing the lid in our house is the cat. She vaults to the lid, then to the shower. One close call was enough. I do not want to chase an ickky soaked cat around the house.
While I was at work, my wife sprayed air freshener in the bathroom just before her Aunt arrived. The top of the seat had gotten wet from the mist and her Aunt freaked out and left. That was fifteen years ago and Auntie still refuses to visit our house. Best 89 cents of air spray we’ve ever bought.

Consideration goes both ways. When finished men can put the seat down, and women can put the seat UP.

Speaking of being considerate this weekend’s Case of the Missing Case, Zach has to interview the power packed Carol.

I always put the lid down after using the toilet. It prevents the wife from falling in. Also keeps the dog from drinking from the toilet bowl.

I knew one lady who complained that her husband never raised the seat when he should have. And he trained their sons to not raise the seat… TMI?

On the one hand, the cover should be closed, not just having the seat down. On the other, women should look at what they are doing.
