Fruitcake is an object of cartoon derision, but IRL more people must like it than not… or why would people spend a fortune buying or making it?
They don’t go looking for gifts they think their friends will throw away, or even re-gift.
If you will, you should save them the expense, and tell them!
I happen to like it… NOT the stuff you can buy at the supermarket, or even most of what you can order online or by mail… but a good home made fruitcake is a real treat.
Especially English Christmas cake, which has more dried fruit and less candied stuff, and if you’re lucky, a coating of marzipan and hard icing.
English candied fruit isn’t as sticky and sugary anyway, if you can get a cake actually made in England.
But an English friend and I have made each other Christmas cakes off and on for years, here in California, using what we can buy here, and they’re much appreciated.
The fruit itself has gotten incredibly expensive, and the best fruitcakes are so heavy and dense just because they contain a lot of it.
Add brandy, and very pricey marzipan… it can easily cost well over $20 just to make a medium size one…. and it takes hours.
If I’m making YOU one, and you’d prefer a chocolate cake from a $1.99 mix, hey, great… just let me know!
