I work in a bar-restaurant. Itâs football season, a home game is on, and weâre almost certainly beyond capacity. The music is loud so people can hear it, and people are talking loudly to be heard over the music.
Iâm serving tables, but thereâs a large group of men standing by the bar between where the food gets picked up and where the tables are, so I have to get through them to serve food to people. I have to âyellâ for them to excuse me â not in a rude tone, just loudly. Everyone in the group smiles and moves out of the way every time (but goes right back to where they were once Iâm through) except for one guy.
Customer: âYou keep yelling at people with that b**** face on. Itâs mean.â
Me: Immediately pi$$ed off âDude, look around. Iâm busy. I have people waiting on food. Iâm not smiling like you seem to expect because Iâm focused on doing my f****** job. Yâall are standing exactly in the way of me doing that job. You clearly arenât paying enough attention to just get out of the way without being told, and I have to get through, so I can either say, âExcuse me,â loudly enough for you to hear me, or I can push you. Pushing might make me drop things, though, so Iâve opted to make myself heard. If thatâs an issue for you, youâre welcome to get the f*** out. Now, you seem pretty bad at using your eyes, so this is food that a customer is waiting on, and youâre in my way. EXCUSE ME!â
He didnât leave, but he didnât say anything else to me. I overheard him complaining to other customers, my coworkers, my boss, etc., but no one gave him the response he was clearly looking for.
