I remember reading (in the Readers’ Digest, I think) back in the late 1950s about an extended clan (called the Johnsons, I think) who ran that scam. They would insist on being paid up front, but their “resurfacing” consisted of mopping a layer of used motor oil on an asphalt driveway and then vanishing before the home owner realized that they’d been had. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
