You don’t have to permanently change your life but take advantage of a break. I always used unexpected “time off” to do things like work Renaissance Faires, modest car travel and help out my friends on their projects.

I know this is symbolic, but In general, it’s not the big cheese who hands you the severance package. It’s some poor overworked HR person.
