I have Cosmos by Carl Sagan, on my night stand. I never tire of reading it. What a wonderful perspective he had.

Humans (including me) take themselves so often, so seriously. Most do not even recognize that their pet project/belief is likely to disappear in a generation or two. Maybe it’s a way we push back against this reality?

Voyager 1 was launched by NASA on September 5, 1977 to study the outer Solar System and the interstellar space. Astronomer Dr. Carl Sagan suggested it contain a message in the form of a 12" gold plated phonograph record containing sounds and images portraying the diversity of life and culture on Earth. In February, 1990 as Voyager 1 was exiting the Solar System at a distance of 3 billion miles from Earth, Dr. Sagan requested the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to aim the spacecraft back towards Earth to snap a photograph. He named the resulting picture ‘The Pale Blue Dot’ and wrote a book about it.

Yesterday I heard an episode of “Throughline” on NPR about how influential Carl Sagan was in the cause of nuclear disarmament.

I think that I’ll make a video of this one. It is a message that we desperately need now.

I enjoy Zen Pencils, but there are plenty of other species of earthlings that share our planet, most have suffered endlessly from the human earthlings.
