Clayton: Have you always been good with technology. Dad? Adam: Uh-huh. In fact, there was a computer named after me in the 80's. Clayton: Really? Adam: Oh, yes! The Coleco Adam was the talk of the industry for three weeks in 1983. Clayton: Co-le-co? Adam: Yes. Short for the "Connecticut Leather Company." Clayton: Why would a leather company make computers? Adam: The Adam failed so prodigiously they needed somewhere to "hide".

Both Tandy and Coleco started out making leather hobby stuff - kits for making wallets, belts & stuff like that. Coleco branched out into swimming pools, then toys, then video games.
I worrked at Coleco in the early ’80s whent the Adam was in development - it was neat getting paid to work on games.

From 1976 to 2002, Radio Shack was one of my favorite elecronic stores, but not anymore. Now it’s CCrane.com(2003-present).

Does anyone remember Allied that turned into Radio Shack. Big catalog from which you could order most any part you needed.
I think they had a main store in Chicago, but that was about it. All mail order.

My first computer, a gift when I was ill. It opened a new world for me, one I’ve not left since. Thanks ADAM – for all the curses, the enjoyment, the laughter and most of all for all the friends you introduced me to around the world. Including a bunch right here. Cheers all!

I still have my ADAM carefully packed away. The Z80 processor was one of the finest ever built (at that time) and I fought to keep ADAM alive. Coleco is the poster-child example of a company shooting themselves in the foot by poor marketing and then refusing to admit they made a mistake.

Adam should be tanned for that lame pun.

What actually happened was that some snake came along with an Apple and drove the Adam out of the marketplace …
