Heinlein was the originator of that. I think it was in Number of the Beast with all the alternate universes. He visits OZ and his spaceship is altered by Ozma so it is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.
My favorite scene out of all the Harry Potter movies: one at a time, everyone walks into what appears to be a cramped little tent, then we see that the inside is incredibly spacious and filled with all the comforts of home. “I love magic,” Harry says, in a voice filled with wonder.
