Europeans originally carved turnips. It was Americans who first carved pumpkins.

Halloween comes from the Celtic festival of Samhain, which predates Christianity. As with Christmas, the Christians stole the previous pagan festival to convert more people to their sect. Pumpkin carving comes from the Irish and Scottish tradition of carving jack o’lanterns in swedes, or turnips.

Katy, you need something that’s hollow on the inside. Like your father’s head.

Carrying lighted veggies was part of the pagan sabbath of Samhain. All the fires of the village were extinguished, and they used the turnip lamps to get to the great bonfire. There they lit brands and carried them back to relight the home fires against the coming winter.

Bananas are for eating. Pumpkins are for carving. One exception is to mix pumpkin guts with a pound of sugar and bake it up in a fluffy crust. Then the pumpkin is eatable, but just barely.
