States are making restaurants pay wait staff and restaurants think that paying people will make it harder to find good help. Labor is NOT the prime cause of overhead costs. I worked in a restaurant in the medieval times when minimum wage was $1.15 an hour. I got $2.00 as a busboy. The boss told me he paid $4.00 for a quart of booze(premetric even). He sold it for 90 cents a shot. That wound up to be 15 bucks profit on one bottle and about 1 day’s pay for me. Okay fast food places don’t serve booze! Okay, I go to McDs and get a quarter pounder with cheese meal for $12. I can make it at home for about $3.50 and I’m buying the food retail.
I worked for 50 years. Some factory, some retail inside, some garden center, and the rest in child care and engineering. I was treated well when I worked in retail. Now I cringe at the people I see shopping and screaming and cursing at the retail staff. I’m not surprised at the high turnover. Who wants to be paid minimum wage or lower to be screamed and cursed at????
