Back in the seventies, grocery stores in Reykjavik were only allowed to be open until six on Mondays through Thursdays, to seven on Fridays and to noon on Saturdays. All grocery stores were closed on Sundays. The store where I worked decided to ignore the rules, and to have the store open to seven on Thursdays as well. Before they made the change, the manager went to each employee individually and asked “Do you think you could work an extra hour each Thursday? If you can’t, I’m sure you could find a job somewhere else.”
I worked at a store that was unionized…I was a cashier. You had to join the union in order to work there. After all the fees and such for the union, I was making less than minimum wage. I didn’t last long…I quit after a few months.

wish I could’ve made it thru my career life with one single answer all the time like Tabby here – but that was a dream never fulfilled

So adding more staff would require folks to work overtime? Yet again, corporate is clueless.

Simple rule. If you’re paying overtime all the time you need to hire more people. Why pay an employee and a half to do the job one could do?

Does anyone else get the impression that it’s Tabby that actually runs the store?
