It was the end of January 1966. In the midst of the third 19-inch snowfall in five days, four of us were tying to get back to college after the semester break. We got maybe 20 miles before we were stopped by drifts. Had to backtrack and look up the parents of some friends; who kindly let us sleep on the floor of their living room that night. We started off again the next afternoon, complete with warnings from the PA DOT ringing in our ears. The road we were traveling was a major US highway (pre-interstate)—three digits, white shield. At one stretch, the DOT had stopped all traffic because of drifting. They had made a one-lane path, maybe 1/2 mile, through the snow by digging it out with payloaders and were letting traffic go through alternately in each direction. As we drove through, we could see the walls of snow on either side of us, I could have stood on the car we were in and not reached to the top of them. Worst snowstorm I’ve ever had the misfortune to be in. We probably should never have even started. Counting delays, it took us 28 hours to go 80 miles.
…saw the pictures from Atlanta this morning on the weather channel, with all the traffic stopped dead because of ice on the roads, and tons of fender benders…does ANYBODY listen when the police, fire, gov’t, weather people say “STAY HOME”?…Plus kids sleeping overnight in gymnasiums…it’s not like they weren’t warned that this was coming…or am I the crazy one?….

At least their snow-drift entrapment is closer to home this year.
And in town, not out in the country… or at least, somewhere between town and their mobile park.Hopefully on a snow plow route.
Maybe Lester will come find them….with a (miniature) cask of brandy tied around his neck.
