Lingonberries are incredibly expensive here in the Western US…. the only ones I ever see are in tiny jars of imported jelly or syrup.Cranberries are relatively cheap, and very good for you.I don’t like them where they don’t belong… please leave the dried ones out of my cookies and especially my salad, frevinsakes….
But it wouldn’t be Thanksgiving if there weren’t a bowl of cranberry sauce alongside the roast turk… er …. grackle.
Grackles around here hang out in parking lots, looking for food dropped by us. Toss anything out and it’s fair game for them to fight over. Micky D’s has lots of them hanging around. They are a pain in the but at most places. People keep feeding them so they come…..
I love cranberry sauce , juice unsweetened) is good when mixed with other juices or Ginger ale. We make our own sauce and it doesn’t last long here. But I don’t think it’ll make the grackle taste better…
Around here, grackles usually show up in mixed flocks with starlings. The flocks can be noisy and annoying, but they tend to pick grubs out of the grass.
Here is a nice cranberry sauce that is milder than canned cranberry sauce:
Cranberry and Pear Sauce
Ingredients12 oz bag cranberries 1 large pear, peeled, cored & cubed 1 1/2 tablespoons honey 1 1/2 tablespoons maple syrup 3 1/2 tablespoons raw sugar 2 teaspoons cinnamon
Directions
For a great sauce the proportions of cranberries to water are 4:1. In this recipe, the proportions of cranberries to pear are 3:1, but feel free to experiment.
Combine cranberries, pear, water, honey, maple syrup and cinnamon in a pot. Bring to boil, then lower heat and stir occasionally.
The cranberries will begin to pop, keep stirring. When all of the cranberries have popped, the sauce will be ready. This will take about 10-15 minutes (10 minutes or so works for me). The longer you boil, the thicker it will be.
The most important thing to remember is, that you can always add sugar or honey after, but it is not possible to remove it. If you’ve added too much water wither add more cranberries or ladle the water out.
Squab means they’re not just members of the pigeon family, they’re at the stage just before fledging: adult size but not flying yet. And @nboady: thank you for the recipe, sounds great!
Actually, crows are a tasty dish – usually only the breast is used, much like dove. That’s why many states, including California, have a crow hunting season every year.

Actually…. that grackle might not be too tasty, though….
A grackle is a type of crow…and there’s_some_ reason people use the expression “eating crow” to describe humiliating oneself after being wrong.
I think crows, being scavengers, are reputed to taste horrible…maybe grackles live on seed and are fine food … but maybe not.
Grandma may just have an opinion on the subject.
