One story A THING OF BEAUTY I believe it was (by Norman Spinrad it was, I just checked), had a man actually buying the Brooklyn Bridge after flying machines had done away with it’s need. The buyer paid the seller’s agent a bonus of a brick spray-painted with gold paint. Then he discovered the brick actually WAS made of gold, cast to look like a masonry brick.
