These are Magic Ring Trombones. You just gotta know the trick.
They just needed some slide ‘rules’, that’s all.
OK, push the two trombones all the way together, then rotate one of them counterclockwise. Next slide them back halfway and turn one of them sideways. Push them back together again, and they’ll pop right apart. This happens all the time.

“Dueling Slide Trombones” is a lot trickier than that banjo number.
Could turn it into a magic act.
