Andy Capp and Alf Garnett came to epitomize in satire the working class Englishman of the ’60’s. – much like Archie & Edith Bunker and later. Al & Peggy Bundy became parodies of the American working class of their respective generations.
I think that one thing I have always admired about the British, is their ability to “send themselves up”.
Americans have inherited and profited from imitating British satire but rarely reach the pinnacle of wit, so aptly displayed by our cousins, across the pond.
Andy may be a bounder and a bit of a cad but he is ( even in his dotage ) our irascible, predictably unpredictable, but very funny, English uncle.
