Arlo and Janis by Jimmy Johnson for August 14, 2013
August 13, 2013

Transcript:
Arlo: When I was 21, I thought I'd be a feeble old man at this age!
Arlo: But life is great! I feel good! I'm happy!
Arlo: I even have a hot wife!
Janis: You're crazy!
Arlo: I hadn't considered that possibility!
marvee, although it’s hard to tell in cartoon time, they met in the 1960s….And like they say, if you were around in the sixties, then you’re in your sixties (or more!).
Take a good look at the last panel. Right after the “hot wife” comment, she’s head up and “chest” out. According to the body language, Arlo scored big points.
“Good” is an adjective, and modifies “I.” “Well” is an adverb, in which case it modifies “feel,” though in this sense, it’s generally accepted as an adjective. In other words:
“I feel good” = “I have a sense of well-being.”
“I feel well” = “I have a sense of well-being” (as an adjective) or “My sense of touch is functioning properly” (as an adverb).

Why is it so hard for some people to accept a complement?
edclectic over 11 years ago
When I was 21 I never thought I would live to be this age (60). And luckily, I’ve even got a hot wife! Then, again, some people do say I’m crazy.

I have no ’wife ’(hot nor otherwise) in either current sense of the word. I am merely a cat servant (or meowservant) in every sense of he word.

@edclectic: I’m 60, too and I have a hot GF (wife passed away some time ago) 15 years younger than myself. Life is good.

How old are they? Early fifties? That’s a good age. I hope they don’t become Opal and Earl, though I I like them too.

@OldDog1: I’ve made it to 78, NOW what? No turnin’ back NOW, ferdamshure. It’s a one-way road and no U-turns allowed, apparently.

Not the reaction Arlo was looking for. Janis can be such a bitch sometimes…

Like all of us, Janis has been persuaded that “hot” is the exclusive preserve of the young. Boy, are they wrong!
