Arlo and Janis by Jimmy Johnson for September 11, 2015
Transcript:
Mary Lou: "And the farmers markets! We'd pick and pack fresh produce... Mary Lou: Drive for miles, set up our stand... Mary Lou: And be forced to sell at cutthroat prices!" Man: The guys on the end are cheaper! Mary Lou: "At least we got compost out of the deal!"

You only have to sell at cut-throat prices, if you have not distinguished yourself with a separate “must have” brand name. “Jelly is jelly, but with a name like Smuckers, it has to be good.”

I was under the weather for a while and I didn’t plant any tomatoes this year….I really miss them now…..

uh, is there a point to this arc?

I really don’t like Mary Lou’s character. I’ve said it before, but I could see ML being killed off and Gene raising shrimp as a single father. It would be one hell of a story arc.

Try being on the “Weekend in the Park Art Show” circuit. All the cons and you cannot make compost from the stuff that does not sell. The art work you put a week and your heart into sells for $150, if it sells at all.

kea, you just proved it’s great writing….You don’t know where the arc is going…..But you want to know, so you have to keep reading it…..That sounds like fine and clever writing to me…

This arc is rather interesting. I wonder if it is leading somewhere…. like Gene, ML and “Squirt” will move back to the “city” where Arlo and Janis live to get a more traditional job/lifestyle? Or, is this simply a brief arc about how hard it is to farm for your livelihood and Gene, ML, and “Squirt” are just talking about the experience, but are otherwise financially ok where they are at?

This is why I grow only for my family. Any excess, I give to my neighbors. Been there, done that, ain’t going back . . .

The point of the strip was “Farmer’s Markets” and the hardship of sales. Here in FL, I’d have to drive 80 miles just to take Ma one or two miles from her hovel, just so she could save 8 cents a pound, etc… All this was when gas was $3.00+ a gallon and had to drag every toolbox I owned to fix whatever she’d broken that week. And just so’s you remember, it was 14 years ago that a bunch of Arabs stole my sister’s birthday, not to mention 3,000+ others.

My kitchen is full of beets, yesterday it was corn. A friend drove his tiller over to do our garden, we’re scaling back from 90′ × 90′ for enough stuff for the two of us.Beet pickles and Borsch for the next year

People have mentioned this before, but Jimmy or someone (someone else, I ween) sure draws characters differently when he goes to Geneland.

And, if you Market it right, you can sell the Compost at the Farmers Market, too..Sometimes for More than the Veggies that went into it if you head for one close to a Really Pretentious neighborhood..“Artisan Compost” anyone?

Using their Restaurant experience, they could branch out into Jams, Jellies & Pickles and sell them Online..Just have to find ways to Ship Them without breakage..

Vegetables are a cut throat business.
