Time To Open A Laundry Academy

By experience and tradition, I have come to do laundry for our entire family of four. I have my systems, my favourite products, and my schedules. I researched our newest washer-dryer thoroughly before we made the purchase a year and a half ago, and I lived through its teething problems.

To my wife’s credit, it’s not like she wouldn’t know how to do laundry. She’d just do it without subdividing clothes into colours or fabrics, and she’d use basic settings.

I was putting something in the machine the other day when my nine-year-old daughter came up.

Daughter: “I want to learn how to do laundry with the machine!”

Me: “That’s fine. We can do it one day when we have a little time.”

    My wife chimed in immediately:

Wife: “Oh, yeah! I want to sign up for that training, too!”

I throw in the bathroom mats with the towels so long as there’s not too much weight for the washer.

Oh Aunty, we all know you have sniffed yesterday’s t-shirt to see if you can get one more day out of it.

Christmas, Like Laundry, Comes But Once A Year

(I decided to make a pair of dark green boxer shorts as a gift to one of our friends for Christmas. He mentions them to me four months later.)

Friend: “I love those boxers and have been wearing them every night, but they’ve turned my sheets green.”

Me: “The dye ran? That’s odd, because I used the same fabric to make [Husband] a pair and we haven’t had a problem with them. What have you used to wash them?”

    Friend: “I haven’t washed them.”

Me: “You haven’t washed them in four months? What about your sheets?”

Friend: “No, was I supposed to?”

(I worked out right there why he was single.)

    Airing Your Dirty Laundry

(I asked my boyfriend to put some laundry on when I left for work in the morning. He worked later in the afternoon. When I get home, I notice it is still sitting in a pile on the floor. This conversation happens when he gets home.)

Me: “So, I’m not wearing any underwear.”

Boyfriend: thinking I’m trying to seduce him “Oh… really?”

Me: “Yes, because you didn’t put any laundry in when I asked you.”

(It was still in a pile on the laundry room floor the next morning.)

True Friends Know All Your Dirty Laundry

(I’m alone in my hotel room while on vacation in another state. Because it’s getting late, everything is closed and I’m rather bored. I decide to go to the hotel laundry room to do some laundry and bump into another young woman about my age. She picks up one of my shirts that I’ve dropped on the floor and starts to hand it to me when she sees what’s on it.)

Woman: “Wait, is this yours? You listen to [Metal Band]?”

Me: “Yeah, they’re my favorite band.”

    Woman: “Holy crap, mine too!”

(We talk for a bit about music while doing laundry before I return to my room. I’m still bored, so I decide to start playing a video game when I hear a knock at my door.)

Woman: “Sorry if I’m intruding, but I just realized that I’m right next to you and can hear your TV through my wall. Are you playing [Game]?”

    Me: “I sure am!”

Woman: “Awesome! I love that game! Can I come play with you? I don’t have anything else to do tonight.”

(I invited her in and we ended up playing for half the night. While playing we discovered that by sheer coincidence we happened to come from the same state in cities that were about thirty minutes away from each other and that we have several other similar interests. And that is the story of how I met my best friend.)

A Walk To Clear My Laundry

(It’s laundry day so I gather up my clothes in my laundry basket and bring it to the living room to collect my laundry soap. My father is home and notices what I’m carrying.)

    Dad: “Doing laundry?”

Me: “…no, I thought I’d take it for a walk.”
