I recall an illustration I once saw of what marriage should be like. It is a structure with three sides — God as the foundation and the husband and wife making the sides of the triangle, each one anchored at the base and connected to each other at the top. The relationship of a husband and wife should be stronger than their relationship to their children, because children are not part of the marriage triangle. They reside within it, protected by the three sides.
