My husband’s sister adopted a 2 year old girl from China a few years ago. His sister does not eat Chinese food (“hidden calories”) and when niece was about 5 we took her to a Chinese buffet for dinner.
The fortune cookies come and husband explains them to her. She breaks hers open and he starts to read it to her – as written. I looked at him and said “Doesn’t it say that Deena is a pretty girl?” He realized that what I meant is that she would not follow what he was reading and agreed with me and read it to her as I suggested. That made her happy.
