We had one guy who people were giving money. Turns out he had a large house on the shore, he was pulling down more money begging than working. That really hurts the truly needy.
The fact that a few bad actors create an excuse for us not to help those in need, it shouldn’t deter us, – especially, at this time of year – from assisting those who are less fortunate than ourselves.
I find it ironic though, that those with little give so much more to help others, while those with so much, give so little.
I heard about a guy in my area who has a nice house who fakes being a disabled veteran. He goes right from begging to his Lexus and drives to his house. People give him food and if he does not like it, he throws it away.
Yes, some are addicts and some are fakes. Don’t let that jade you. 99.9% of them are real. If you want to make sure your giving is going to the right thing, don’t give money. Give food. We have bags with fruit and nut bars, granola bars, fruit cups, pudding cups, and bottled water that we make up and hand out regularly. You can tell quickly who’s real and who’s not, because a real homeless person won’t refuse food.
I’ve never really believed any of the stories I’ve heard about someone following a “homeless” person back to their mansion or luxury car. If panhandling is paying that much, then why aren’t all homeless people at least in some kind of home? Add to that, begging is pretty much a last-ditch, desperate way to pull in some cash: it’s very embarrassing and humiliating and degrading…I can’t imagine anyone doing it who doesn’t absolutely have to.

’tis the season of giving (even my father and I gave some cash to someone in need when leaving the grocery store)

I make a recurring donation to the Denver Rescue Mission. Then I know the money I give is used properly.
