The correct spelling is hierbabuena (spearmint) in Mexico City the tea for cold is Manzanilla (chamomile) and in Michoacán is Bugambilia (Bougainvillea or paper flower) but the remedy across Hispanoamérica is Caldo de gallina, (farm chicken soup)
The standard cough/sore throat cold remedy in our house in Manzanilla tea con miel ( honey – real honey, not the watered down supermarket kind ) and of course my wife’s home made caldo de gallina.
A little chicken soup cures anything !
When stronger measure are required, then my grandfather’s Irish sling recipe never fails: A healthy shot of whiskey, squeezed lemon ( or lime ) juice, a good dollop of honey, some cloves, and mix with boiling water.
Grandma recommend osha tea for much the same ailments. The tea was made from dried osha roots. Osha is found in damp mountain areas and is known as wild celery, very pungent. When out in the woods and we’d get a whiff of the scent, our first thoughts were (and still is) GRANDMA!
