Just think of the thousands of people whose lives are saved by this non-profit product who will come back and BUY your other obscenely-high-profit products.Think of it as advertising.
I’m not sure that’s true, NebulousRikulau. Hemorrhagic fever is a group of viral diseases including Ebola and Marburg. People with those infections might survive if one of the treatments now under study turns out to be effective, but current treatments don’t offer much chance of survival.
As for the obscenely-high-profit drugs, that’s subject to a great deal of discussion. I can;t think of any defense of Martin Shrekli and his plans to raise the prices of old drugs, but the major drug companies have at least a small defense in their claims that they have to make their profits in developed nations in order to charge affordable prices in poorer countries.
Not for profit is usually not at a loss after operational costs and expansion. Think of a cross between pregnancy testing and the free razor model. The people that test negative still need to be tested at intervals to be sure they stay negative. The ones that test positive will get started into expensive for profit treatment while waiting for positive confirmation.
Ever hear the phrase “Fox guarding the hen house?”
I’d be a lot more forgiving of the ‘for profit’ pharmaceutical business model if it were not for things like the 2012 meningitis outbreak, 404 cases of fungal infection occurred with 29 deaths due to contaminated medication. The list of other similar occurrences is seldom seriously investigated by main stream media in the US. But there have been many cases of deaths, blindness, debilitating long term illnesses and worse. Usually due to a giant lack of over-site and intense focus on ‘make more profit’. That’s a Lethal combo. It’s never going to get better unless we are willing to actually face the problem and do some active work to fix it.If we continue to shrug and say “well I didn’t get sick so it must be OK/exaggerated/not my problem/would take too much of my time” then it will only get worse.
Let’s put it this way, I think that Viagra should be an Obscenely High Priced drug. It’s a recreational drug, not a Real Medication.(Yes, I know that Viagra was first tested as a Blood Pressure medication, until the Side Effect became the primary reason for sales.)
