I recently damaged the baseboards with grout cleaner. Some of it soaked in from underneath. The MDF blistered. I discovered that the adhesive got dissolved. There was a fibrous fluffy mass. I had to scrape out the damaged area, putty fill, and paint. The interior hollow core doors are MDF too.
There was a company in Florida in the 60s (I think) that used coiled cardboard instead of wood for the interior studs. A coworker took out a wall and found that.
